Pleats Please

The story behind this two piece pleated set is random. I was actually in a market in Dakar last summer looking for fabrics with my tailor. I had an idea of what I wanted but for some reason, all of the fabrics I came across weren't cutting it for me. So, we decided to try another market. Once we got to the 2nd place, we walked by this beautiful store that had tons and tons of pleats, I knew I had to go in.

The storeowner was from Gambia, and he had so much knowledge about pleats. He also told us about his business, his travels, the differences in fabrics etc. I wasn't planning on getting anything but after spending 10 minutes in his store, I was convinced I had to. I found this dark green fabric and knew exactly what my tailor could make with it: a two piece set.

Getting your clothes made in Senegal is very common. I find the process to be very personal, because it's all unique to you - even if someone has the same fabric as you, it won't be the same look or vibe. The first step is going to the market, finding your fabric, bargaining with the seller, and then buying it. Once you have everything, you then go to your tailor. He or she will will take your measurements and carefully look at the material you've brought. Afterwards, you explain to them what outfit you want (you can also show a picture) and then, it's a waiting game. It can take days, or sometimes weeks for your piece(s) to be complete.

I was first introduced to this process by my mother, grandmother, and aunt. Like me, they love fashion, dressing up, and unique clothing pieces. For this pleated set, I showed my tailor a picture from Pinterest(love that app!). I wanted something that could be somewhat casual, and comfy enough - hence the oversized shirt and palazzo style pants.

Of course, if you're a fashion lover, as many Senegalese women are, this can get dangerous haha. Seriously, there was a time where I was obsessed with fabric buying. With that said, this is one of the best ways to build a closet full of personalized pieces.
